1980年代中期，以鞭挞金属（Thrash Metal）和早期黑金属（Black Metal）的音乐架构为基础，死亡金属开始出现。Slayer、Kreator、Venom、Celtic Frost等乐队都曾对该流派的创制产生重要影响。Possessed、Death、Obituary、Autopsy、Morbid Angel和Necrophagia等乐队通常被认为是该流派的先驱者。1980年代晚期至1990年代早期，作为一个新兴的音乐流派，死亡金属的媒体关注度日益上升。同时，Nuclear Blast、Earache、Roadrunner等小众音乐唱片厂牌，迅速地签下了众多的死亡金属乐队。进入90年代后，死亡金属开始走向多元化，逐渐催生出了诸如旋律死亡金属（Melodic Death Metal）、技术死亡金属（Technical Death Metal）、死亡厄运金属（Death-doom）、死滚（Death ‘n Roll）乃至死核（Deathcore）等若干子流派或融合流派。
